Article of the Campaign for victims of racist police violence (www.kop-berlin.de) “Where are you going? Your ID, please!” Daniel was astonished and looked at the two men who were suddenly standing in front of him. Some moments ago he accompanied Thomas and Luc to the busstop. After the training they went for a drink, now Daniel was totally tired and he had no idea what the men wanted from him. |

On Aug 30th, the national day of action against custody pending deportation, non-racist organizations call for a demonstration titled “Dead – but not forgotten! Against disappearance in the German system of deportation.” They want to remind the public of 4 persons who died in the German system of deportation on this Aug 30th 1983, 1994, 1999 and 2000 and want to place emphasis on the immediate termination of custody pending deportation. This is the call: |

If you have visited our website regularly, you will have realized that some things have changed recently. We did not only design the website in a more user-friendly way, but we also revised the basic technical principles. We want to offer different languages now and it is easier for us to place new articles on our website. In future we will inform you faster about developments in our institution, different cases of discrimination and statements on political and social developments. We don't want to make policy for people affected by racist marginalisation, but we want to fight for a better world together with them. Therefore, we want to provide that the website is displayed in as many different languages as possible. Up to now our website was available in German and in English. We achieve to provide the whole website in German, English and French. We also try to translate several parts into Russian, Turkish and Arabic. |

Sadly many people in Germany live with the reality of being insulted, victimised, kicked and beaten by the police. Not only left-wingers, prostitutes, homeless persons but also immigrants become victims of police violence. They report about systematic assaults which often start with a “suspected independent” controls, continue with racist insaults and end up with kicks and punches. For the victims these assaults often mean complete powerlessness towards police and authorities. This is reinforced by the fact that there is hardly any chance to prosecute the evil-doers. Because of unfair accounts, non-prosecution and non-sanctioning of assaults, the victims have to figure on being sentenced – not the offender. |

Many people in Germany experience defamation, kicks, punches, unwarranted false imprisonment and harassment when they have contact with the police. Especially members of social minorities – like prostitues, homeless people, left-wingers and especially refugees and immigrants – are affected by discrimination and violation commited by policemen and policewomen. At least since the “scandal of the Hamburg police” in 1994, the documentations of Amnesty International and the campaign “Aktion Courage” the public cannot deny the complex of problems within the police. Nevertheless violation by police-officers are denied by the police and other authorities in the very few cases realized by the public: Officials accuse the affected people and witnesses of lying in order to throw a bad light on the police. Moreover, officials impute that it is the victims’ own fault and that the behaviour of the police officers was adequate, because they were provoked by the victims. If it is not possible to reinterprate or deny the assault, the ministers of the interior act according to two possibilities: Either the violation is pointed out as a single incident, the offenders are played down as “black sheep” and that the reasons leading to the incident are ignored or the offenders are redefined as a victim of their working conditions – the violation is acceptable because police officers have to work in districts which provide much stress and hostility. |
