Open letter:

Discriminating procedures and refusing telephone extension for asylum seekers in general and especially Mr. O. (customer number: XXXXXXXXXX)

Ladies and gentleman,

Mr. O adressed to the ADB, because he felt dicriminated by the German Telekom. He applied for a telephone extension on Oct 17th 2006. He received a letter from T-Com (branch north-east) which was dated on that same day. It said that the German T-Com will not provide a telephone extension for him. The reason for that was that T-Com does not provide telephone extensions for asylum seekers in general.

Mr. O urgently needs a landline, because he is critically ill and cannot handle his daily life in a medical sense. The attending doctor comments on the neccessitiy of a landline:

“He (Mr O) urgently needs a telephone, because there are certain acute-threatening situations that appear suddenly. These situations can mainly be resolved by calling a doctor. So, consultations of surgeries and hospitals can be minimized.

Irrespective of the special situation of Mr. O, access to the German telephone system should be guaranteed for everybody without discrimination. The behaviour of the German Telekom is a contribution to exclude asylum seekers from public and social life in Germany.

Wording and phrases used in the letter reinforces the discriminating manners of the German Telekom. Moreover, the Telekom asks for understanding, because this action would also be in the interest of Mr. O. But he clearly explained his interest to us: access to the German telephone-net without irrespective of nationality, residence permit status or any proceedings concerning asylum. Therefore, we push the following claim on the German Telekom:

  • immediate approval of the requested landline for Mr. O
  • termination of the discriminating behaviour of the Telekom; immediate approval of the requested landline fot other afftected people
  • apology of the German Telekom to Mr. O for the discrimination and the resulting handicaps

Yours sincerely

Reza Rassouli

(for the executive council)
